Catalog is an American spelling of the English word catalogue, which comes from the French word catalogue, which comes from the Latin word catalogus, which comes from the Greek word katalogos, which comes from two Greek words, legein (“to say, count”) and kata (“down; completely”).

So there you have a catalog of the etymology of the word catalog, which “counts down” or “says completely” the word’s roots.
