Forty Days of Crafts: Jesus’ Little (Pom-Pom) Lamb

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me — just as the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the sheep.”
— John 10:14-15 (NIV)

Celebrate the One who is both the Good Shepherd and the Lamb of God with this sweet sheep craft.

Materials:Sheep_1forweb

  • DIY pom-pom maker: Two cardboard circles, 3 ½ inches wide, with a 2 ¼ inch hole cut out of the center. (These need to be sturdy, so it’s best if you use a hard cardboard or a slightly hard plastic material.)
  • Yarn
  • Lamb’s head template
  • Store-bought mini pom-poms (4 black and 1 white)
  • Paper clips (6) or glue
  • Tape

Step 1: Take approximately 145 feet of yarn and fold it in half 3 or 4 times. (This makes it a more manageable length.)

Step 2: Wrap yarn around the edges of the DIY pom-pom maker circles. When you start, make sure to hold the end of the yarn down with your finger. Then as you wrap the yarn around a second time, wrap the yarn over the finger that is holding the yarn down. As you pull the yarn down to hold the ends down, pull your finger out of the yarn and press it back down to hold the yarn in place. You can release the yarn as soon as you can feel the yarn is secure and will not fall off the circle when you take your fingers off. Continue to wrap the yarn around the two circles until the rings are completely covered in yarn.

Step 3: When you get to the last inch of yarn, gently pull up some of the yarn wrapped around the rings. This will create a small pocket. Then gently tuck the last inch of yarn into the pocket. This will hold the yarn in place. (Hint: When wrapping the yarn around the rings, do not wrap it too tightly. This will make it easier for you to slide scissors in between the two rings.)

Step 4: Slide the scissors in between the two discs and cut around the outside of the ring.

Step 5: When you have finished cutting the yarn, gently pull the two rings slightly apart. This will allow you to slip a piece of yarn between the two rings.

Step 6: Tie the yarn you wrapped around the middle of the yarn and secure tightly.

Step 7: Once you have the yarn tied, gently pull both rings off of their respective sides. You should now have a pom-pom.

Step 8: Print out lamb’s head template and cut it out.

Step 9: Straighten one end of a paper clip and tape the flat end to the back of the lamb’s head. Then push the straightened paper clip through the center of your pom-pom and secure it by bending the end back on to itself.

Step 10: Take the 5 small pom-poms and stick a paper clip through the center of each. Straighten one end of each paper clips and stick them each through the center of the pom-pom and fold each over to secure. (Make sure the four black pom-poms are attached to the bottom of your lamb. They are the lamb’s feet.)
