Welcome back to EBYR All Over, a Friday roundup of all the EBYR-related news, reviews, interviews, and other interesting online content we can gather in a given week.
News from Eerdmans & Elsewhere
- It’s been another busy week for Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet, the award-winning author-illustrator team of The Right Word. On Tuesday, we shared the videos they made for the Texas Bluebonnet Award (their book is included on this year’s Master List).
- On Wednesday, Travis Jonker featured Melissa’s video on his 100 Scope Notes blog.
-
Stickers! Yesterday, John Schu published a “2 Questions and 1 Sentence” interview with Melissa on the Mr. Schu Reads blog, which concluded with this brilliant and pithy line:
“Reading is free and gives you freedom.”
- Also on Thursday, the Shore County Day School shared some fourth grade artwork made in homage to The Right Word and Peter Mark Roget. (What a great idea for the classroom!)
- And if you’re wondering how those award stickers end up on the books, well, it’s not magic — just a lot of enthusiastic EerdFolk. (We stickered 10,000 books between Monday and Tuesday!)
- Ready and Waiting for You, by Judi Moreillon and illustrated by Catherine Stock, was featured on the Mother Goose on the Loose website (what a great name!). Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen says the book ” is much more than the average ‘prepare for kindergarten’ book. The loving tone and multi-cultural characters in this book distinguishes it from all the others.”
-
Mikis and the Donkey The International Literacy Association (ILA — formerly the International Reading Association) featured the 2015 ALA YMA Award-Winners, including The Right Word and this year’s Batchelder winner, Mikis and the Donkey.
- The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) announced the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award. Hopkins is a renowned children’s poet — and the author of Manger and Mary’s Song — and his namesake award, to be given every three years, will “recognize and encourage the publication of an excellent book of poetry or anthology for children and/or young adults.”

Can’t wait to read Carmen’s book!
That’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing the link with us. We are very excited to be working with Carmen on this book.
